Saint Emilion (25 km from Ste Foy La Grande and Castillon)

Situated 35km to the north-east of Bordeaux, between Libourne and Castillon-La-Bataille, Saint-Emilion is a really wonderful "open museum" . Its troglodyte architecture is amazing , with its monolithic church , the only one in the world!

More than seventy hectares of underground caves dug in the calcareous rock but it's not the only one like it ; in the steep lanes of Saint-Emilion, there are a succession of sites,monuments and relics of the past (roman age) which will delight the visitor .

St Emilion and its area constitute an amazing landscape ; this territory of more than seven thousand eight  hundred hectares was designated in 1999 as past of the World Patrimony of UNESCO for the Saint -Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru wine appellations. 

 


       Castillon La Bataille ( 22km from Ste Foy La Grande)

After three centuries of Aquitaine belonging to the English Crown, the Battle of Castillon marked the end of the Hundred Years ' War.It finally allowed the King of France to
establish his authority. Over seven hectares at the actual site of the battle seven hundred volunteers with four hundred and fifty actors and more than fifty horseback riders  participate in this huge historical reconstruction every year .

  Two exciting hours are filled with stunts , special effects and explosive effects are combined with the everyday life of the Middle Ages , with rural scenes set in a farm or scenes from
 the grape harvest ,shooting parties and Market day with street sellers .  The area is known also for its wine appellation of the Côtes de Castillon.

 


 Bergerac (  20 Km from Sainte Foy La Grande )

South-west of the Dordogne the area of Bergerac offers a huge territory for the tourist . Bergerac is the door of the Red Perigord (called red after the wine of the valley ).

Take a walk in the city streets  and discover  famous sites like the Museum of Tobacco , Museum of Wine , the House of the Wines of Bergerac and the Cloister of Recollets.

Every Wednesday and Saturday, the local market affords many  gastronomic delights , handicrafts , and regional products .

Discover the churches of Notre-Dame and Saint-Jacques ,and the  famous statue of Cyrano of Bergerac near the banks of the River Dordogne.

  


                 The Castle of Duras ( 22 Km from Sainte Foy La Grande)

Situated in the North of the Lot et Garonne department ,this medieval castle is a place to go to with all the family.

Built at the end of the XIIth century , the Castle of Duras is a labyrinth with its 35 rooms ; there is also an ethnological cave which shows the rural life of this period and throughout the centuries .

From the top of its tower , you have an exceptional panorama over the Dropt Valley .
